Short answer: we do not have reliable evidence that psilocybin treats or reverses Alzheimer’s disease. Research is early, and psilocybin is not an approved therapy for dementia.
There is a 2026 single-patient case report describing notable improvements after psilocybin-containing mushrooms in a woman with advanced Alzheimer’s, published in Frontiers in Neuroscience. A case report cannot show causation, efficacy, or safety, and I cannot verify its findings beyond what is described in that paper.
Proposed mechanisms like boosted neuroplasticity, higher BDNF levels, and altered brain network connectivity remain hypotheses in Alzheimer’s. Placebo effects, symptom fluctuation, and observer bias are plausible alternatives. Well-controlled clinical trials are needed to test benefit, dose, risks, and durability.
For now, the honest answer is that we do not know if psilocybin helps Alzheimer’s. Let’s see what rigorous studies show next.
