How important is facilitator training in psilocybin treatment for depression?

Facilitator training appears crucial in psilocybin trials for depression because set and setting can shape the session. A recent BMC Medical Education study evaluated a 15-week program for nurses in a Swedish trial and found that participants valued in-person, hands-on practice far more than webinars.

Self-ratings showed they felt only moderately prepared and wanted more practical training. Objective coding of simulated patient calls found a small improvement in partnership, a nonsignificant trend toward higher empathy, and little change in specific conversational skills.

The takeaway is that training matters, and its format matters. Skills central to psychedelic facilitation, such as reflective listening and collaborative pacing, likely require experiential practice, supervision, and feedback, especially for professionals whose usual role emphasizes information giving.

These findings come from a small, uncontrolled sample using role-plays, so conclusions are tentative, and I cannot verify effects on clinical outcomes. Still, the signal is clear: robust, practice-heavy training is likely key to high-quality facilitation.

In short, facilitator training is important, and deeper practical components seem essential.
